Step 3: The sides: Get the second row all the same color

Youtube video starting on 7:16

Position the cube so that the front of the cube is yellow. Then, you need to pick a cross piece from your front face that has no yellow in it. In the cube below, the piece is marked as C1-piece. Rotate the front side that the color of the other side of the C1-piece (C2) matches the color of the side. In our example, the color of the other side of the front (C2) is orange, C2 must be positioned on the orange side. When you do this you have three alternatives:

  • The color of C1 is on the left side.
In this case, you exchange the piece C1-C2 with the piece E1-E2 on the left. Goto 3a
  • The color of C1 is on the right side.
In this case, you exchange the piece C1-C2 with the piece E1-E2 the right. Goto 3b
  • All cross pieces (C1) either contain yellow, or all the other sides of the cross pieces (C2) contain yellow as well.
In this case, you have to move a yellow piece out of the way. Goto 3c

Step 3a: The color of C1 is on the left side

When the color of C1 is on the left side, you must exchange the piece C1-C2 with E1-E2, from left to right.

  • Color of C1 is green.
  • The green side is on the right.

C1 = Cross piece yellow side
C2 = Color on the other side of cross piece

To do this exchange is a two-way process.

First, exchange it from left to right.

  1. Rotate the front face to the left: F'
  2. Rotate the bottom from left-to-right: D
  3. Rotate the right side down towards you: R
  4. Rotate the middle layer of the front side from left-to-right E
  5. Restore the right side again: R'

Then, fix the white side.

  1. See 3d how to do this.

Start over with step 3 until the top two rows contain all the same color on all sides.

Step 3b: The color of C1 is on the right side

When the color of C1 is on the right side, you must exchange the piece C1-C2 with E1-E2, from right to left.

  • Color of C1 is red.
  • The red side is on the left.

Hint: Click on the button to see the left side.

To do this exchange is a two-way process.

First, exchange it from right to left.

  1. Rotate the front face to the right: F
  2. Rotate the bottom from right-to-left: D'
  3. Rotate the left side down towards you: L
  4. Rotate the middle layer of the front side from right-to-left E'
  5. Restore the left side again: L'

Then, fix the white side.

  1. See 3d how to do this.

Start over with step 3 until the top two rows contain all the same color on all sides.

Step 3c: All pieces contain yellow

It could be that on the yellow side facing you, all the corner pieces are

  • Yellow
  • or the other side of the corner piece is yellow
In this case, you can do neither the rotations from 3a or 3b, but you have to move away one of the yellow piece. To do this, search for a piece on the second row on the sides which does ont yet match the correct color, e.g. on the left side of the middle piece, or on the right side of the middle piece.
  • In our example, such a piece would be the red piece on the orange side (W = Wrong piece) which does not match the correct color.

To do this exchange is a two-way process.

First, exchange it from left to right (when the W-piece is on the right).

  1. Rotate the bottom from left-to-right: D
  2. Rotate the right side down towards you: R
  3. Rotate the middle layer of the front side from left-to-right E
  4. Restore the right side again: R'

Then, fix the white side.

  1. See 3d how to do this.

Start over with step 3 until the top two rows contain all the same color on all sides.

Step 3d: Fix the white side

After a rotation as in 3a, 3b or 3c, the white side is messed up. The white pieces are distributed over two sides:

  • The white side contains 5 white pieces (Top side).
  • The other side contains a row of three white pieces, and a single cross white piece (Front side).

Explanation:
W = White pieces
WC = White cross piece

Fix the white side:

  1. Rotate the full rows of white pieces to the white side, in our case: L'
  2. Move the white cross piece (WC) aways from the middle: D
  3. Move the middle part of the white side down: M
  4. Move back the white cross piece (WC): D'
  5. Move back the middle part: M'

Voila: The white site is fixed again.

Result of step 3

  • The white side is complete (on TOP)
  • On all sides the top row, and the middle row are complete.
